Welcome........
To New Zealand Grass Karting .

What is Grass Karting?

Motor sport with an emphasis on safe fun for the whole family. As the name indicates most racing is on grass fields, but we are not solely limited to one surface. Karts are similar to those used for track racing but most are modified to handle slightly rougher conditions.

What do we race on?

Because the karts are not limited to seal, we can race on various surfaces, dirt, grass, speedway, hill climbs, sprints, street racing and tarmac. Conditions of any one race can change quite dramatically during the day. Tracks get bumpy and dry, water tankers add a bit of slip and slide. Adding these extra variables places greater emphasis on the drivers ability to read and react to the conditions. Grass and dirt by nature are not easy to get a lot of traction on, this adds an extra mix of luck and skill, having lots of horsepower is not always critical but it helps.

Why do we do it?

Now that's a difficult one to explain. But the sheer power to weight ratio while sitting just cm's from the ground holds a certain amount of exhilaration. Sliding with the steering on hard lock through a corner among several other karts while gunning the juice to be flung down the next straight is quite fun too. Travelling at speeds just over 100kmh down the straight and thinking how long can I hold off before I start breaking, while hitting a bump becoming airborne and landing sideways, is enough to give the most level headed person a thrill.

How are we Structured?

Most clubs are not affiliated with any national organisation. Each club is a separate entity in it's own right. So you will need to check with the local club in your area as to how they operate and under what spec's the karts must comply. Although most have similar spec's it always pays to check especially if visiting another club. Once a year we all get together for the South Island Champs. These are hosted by clubs on a rotational basis. South Island's have their own set of rules for the event which are strickly marshaled.

TARMAC RACING TARMAC RACING

We are having two race meetings this year on the tarmac at the sliver steam race way. This is a must do so get those karts ready!.
Out of town clubs members are welcome.
Cost at this stage will be $20.00 per kart, scrutineering 11am. Please note you must have a catch bottle to collect any and all fluids water oil etc also includes crank case vents. All water-cooled karts must run straight water i.e. no antifreeze. If you don’t have a catch bottle you won’t be racing easy as that. This is open to all clubs but you must be a member. SOME OF THE BEST NEWS YET FOR GRASS KARTING

This year a few companys which promotes trades as a career is running the OTAGO SOUTHLAND GRASS KART CHALLENGE and we also hear the Canterbury has joined in this year too welcome aboard!. The idea behind this is to have secondary school pupils from 20 schools in the Otago, Southland and Canterbury area build a Grass Kart of the OWN design over two terms at school. They then come together at the end of term 4 to have them jugded and race over two days in Invercargill.
This will take place in October 2008.

This will be great coverage for the sport as they are hoping to expand this and run it New Zealand wide as an annual event. Imagine having a New Zealand Grass Karting Champs!

If you would like to learn more about this event visit the Skills For Work web site.
